Each year, thousands of locals and visitors gather at the Mackay Turf Club for a day that perfectly combines thrilling thoroughbred racing, elegant fashion, great food, live entertainment and an electric social atmosphere. Whether you're a racing enthusiast, catching up with friends, or simply dressing up for one of the region's biggest events, the Mackay Cup offers something for everyone.
This year I had the privilege of photographing the event from start to finish, documenting everything from the early morning preparations through to the final celebrations. It's a day that moves incredibly quickly, with countless moments unfolding across the course, and that's exactly what makes event photography so rewarding.
More Than Just Horse Racing
While the racing is naturally the headline attraction, the Mackay Cup is about far more than what happens on the track.
Throughout the day the course was filled with excitement as guests arrived in their race-day best, catching up with friends and enjoying the atmosphere that only comes with a major regional event. Every enclosure had its own personality—from relaxed conversations over drinks to cheering crowds lining the rails as the horses charged towards the finish line.
One of the most enjoyable parts of the day was capturing those genuine, unscripted moments that often become people's favourite photographs. A laugh between friends, the anticipation before a race begins, children watching the horses walk through the mounting yard, or the celebrations after a winner crosses the line—these are the moments that tell the real story of the day.
The Challenge of Photographing Horse Racing
Horse racing is one of the most technically demanding sports to photograph.
The speed of the horses, changing light, unpredictable movement and split-second opportunities leave very little room for error. Every race requires careful positioning, anticipation and timing to capture the intensity of the competition.
As the field rounded the final turn and accelerated down the home straight, the atmosphere around the course became electric. These are the moments that make sports photography so exciting—the power of the horses, the determination of the jockeys and the emotion that unfolds in just a few seconds.
It's a privilege to preserve those moments for owners, trainers, jockeys and racing fans alike.

No Mackay Cup would be complete without Fashions on the Field.
Every year the creativity and effort that goes into race-day fashion is incredible. From classic elegance to bold modern styles, competitors brought colour, personality and confidence to the event.
Photographing fashion at an event like this isn't just about documenting outfits. It's about capturing confidence, personality and the excitement of participating in one of Mackay's premier social occasions.
Telling the Story of the Day
One of the things I enjoy most about event photography is telling the complete story rather than simply creating individual images.
That means photographing the details that often go unnoticed—the interactions between people, the atmosphere around the venue, the anticipation before each race, the celebrations afterwards and everything in between.
When these images are viewed together, they become more than photographs. They become a visual record of an event that people can return to for years to come.
